Don’t Move Too Quickly…

When God does something in your life…don’t move too quickly beyond it to the next thing on your agenda, your calendar, or your daily routine.

Over and over again God tells us to REMEMBER. He knows how significant it is for us to remember and celebrate what He’s done for us…to remind us of His great love for us, to give us faith for the future, and to give us courage for the next.

Questers…we’re just days away from our 11 year anniversary. Do you remember how God has met you in this place? How are you doing at telling the stories? …at remembering? …celebrating? Take the survey on my blog this week to remind yourself of His great work in your life!

Uprisers…it’s just been two weeks since God met us in such a substantial at The Uprising on April 15th. Do you remember what He stirred in you that day? …the seismic shift He began in your heart and ministry? It really did happen. So many of you recovered the dream. I’ve been so proud of those of you who’ve texted, twittered, facebooked, etc about what God did in you.  Take a few minutes and tell the story at www.TheUprising.org. It will cement something in your heart and spur on other leaders who need to be reminded that it’s possible!

Don’t move too quickly or get so busy that you forget to fall on your knees at the cross. You can live in awe of what He’s done in and through you…and wrecked by His love for you. I forget hundreds of things a day, but I will never recover from what Jesus did in me on November 12, 1982.

Road Trip…NeedtoBreathe!

Took a road trip the other day to surprise a great friend of mine and see NeedtoBreathe in concert in Birmingham, Alabama. It was the loudest concert I’ve ever been to (louder than U2, the Stones, Van Halen, etc.). Just an unbelievable show by one of my top bands! Remarkable.

At the end of the night, after singing their guts out, the guys wrapped up a fantastic encore with an acoustic version of Washed by Water. They left the main stage, went outside, and climbed through a hole in the wall onto a metal fire escape in Birmingham’s Sloss Furnace (a steel mill turned concert venue) to get closer to the packed out crowd. Check it out…

Rating Your Dating While Waiting for Mating

Man…I saved this week’s title for years (after I swiped it from Fellowship Church): Rating Your Dating While Waiting for Mating. Can’t believe Justin got to teach it! I was dying to bring this one, but I was glad for Justin to get the honor. It’s been remarkable and important to reflect on what God began here just over a week ago at The Uprising. (The stories I’m getting via email, texts, etc. are amazing!) Thanks for going for it, J. You nailed it!

Here are Justin’s reflections on the weekend:

I’m so thankful we are part of a church where we can talk about the realities of dating in the 21st century and at the same time hear the unchanging, timeless truths of God’s word that provide a strong foundation to build our lives (and dating relationships) on. I had a blast teaching Week 3 of DTR — thanks so much for the opportunity, Pete! Here’s some of what’s sticking with me upon further review…

1. The music team was having a blast and helping us enter into the topic of dating! Where else can you hear Katy Perry & NEEDTOBREATHE in church? Anyerin, Becca and the entire band — way to go! It was obvious you were having a blast — and so were we!

2. Two words: “Lowered Expectations.” Holy cow! Drama team, you made us laugh so hard with those horrific real-life singles ads. I can honestly say that you’ve redefined what I mean when I tell people Quest is “not what you’d expect!”

3. The root of people’s resistance to having someone (including God) speak into their dating life comes back to a trust issue: “Can I really trust God with what matters most to my heart? Does He really care about my needs?”

4. Embrace the Wait! A relationship isn’t a prerequisite for being a whole person. I loved 1 Corinthians 7:17 in The Message: “Don’t be wishing you were someplace else or with someone else. Where you are right now is God’s place for you. Live and obey and love and believe right there. God, not your marital status, defines your life.”

5. People had such different (and fun) reactions to the “Unicorn Tip!” Guys: Be a pursuer… show some class & ask her out! (But I didn’t say stalk her, okay?).  Girls: Be pursuable & honorable (Guys are visual: Use it, but don’t abuse it!)

6. How’s it going rating your dating? The four areas we walked through gave people some solid handles to evaluate how their dating is going…
Spiritual Life: Is this team propelling you toward God or creating barriers?
Integrity: Is our relationship creating strength or creating chaos?
Focus: Is this relationship sharpening our focus or altering it?
Chemistry: Do we bring the best out of each other?

7. Wait to Mate! God gives us a clear word about sex outside of marriage: Wait! Because He loves us, He gives us boundaries (or guardrails). Dating couples: don’t play chicken with the guardrails — there’s always damage when you hit (or crash through) the guardrails.

8. Our hearts need to rest on something solid — is going to be sand or slate (rock)? Jesus said to build on the solid Rock of His love for you, not expect that kind of strength from another person. People don’t have the build integrity to be the foundation for their own lives, much yours.

9. Seize the opportunity to grow in community! If you’re single or dating, I’d love to invite you to hang out with Mosaic (a community that’s embracing the wait) on Saturday nights. God has so much for you in this season of your life — don’t go it alone.

10. For the past 11 years at Quest, we’ve been doing just what Paul prayed for in Ephesians 3: “With both feet planted firmly on love… take in, with all followers of Jesus, the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love.” Next weekend is Quest’s 11th anniversary & Pastor Pete will be back up for a pivotal week in DTR on Community. What we’ve got here at Quest ain’t “no ordinary love” — don’t miss next weekend!

This World is Not Our Home

When you go on vacation, you don’t spend much time re-arranging the furniture and fixing up the place where you’re staying. Because it isn’t home. You go, stay and have a blast…but you don’t treat it as if you’re going to live there forever.

That’s a great picture of the reality of our lives here on earth. This world is not our home. One of the quickest ways to get sidetracked from God’s calling and plans for our lives is to live as though it were…focusing on the temporary as if it’s eternal.

It’s true for all of us, but let me speak to leaders for a minute…God has called you to the only eternal-stakes game in town. One day…every single person you’ve ever locked eyes with will spend eternity either with God or apart from Him. Never ever lose sight of FOREVER…and why you’ve been called. Have a blast here…but do it recognizing that one day He’ll call “time’s up” and the only thing that will remain is people…the treasures of heaven.

By the way…that’s YOU and me, friends. WE are the treasures of heaven. Kinda incredible, isn’t it?

The Uprising Remix…Tonight

Calling all Questers & Uprisers…
DON’T miss Wednesday night’s Celebration at 6:30pm!

Whether you were an Uprising volunteer, an Uprising guest or just a Quester who’s just been hearing the buzz…you won’t want to miss a minute of this night. Less than a week ago, hundreds of pastors and leaders met together for The Uprising and God did something remarkable. We walked away wrecked…ready to make the #1 thing Jesus was passionate about OUR passion as well.  Tonight’s Celebration will be an incredible night worshiping and remembering all He began in us and through us. I can’t wait for you guys to hear the stories!

Uprisers…you’re welcome to just show up! (Heck…if you’re in easy driving distance, why not?) Or you can watch us live online.

Questers…I hope you’ll come out and celebrate how God used YOU to reach pastors who needed to be reminded that hope is still possible. I’m so proud to be your pastor. Almost a week ago you were shining Jesus to almost 900 pastors and leaders from 20 states, 20 denominations and 4 countries…and He made His case, in part, through YOU. Unbelievable.

You are just an incredible picture of a culture of redemption that COMPELS a watching world to take notice. Thanks for believing Him and for choosing to let Him spend your one and only lives for His purposes.

Let’s worship hard together tonight!

I’ll see you there…

Who’s Kidding Who?

Helen Musick, Quest’s Transformation Pastor, led out this weekend in our next installment of DTR: Who’s Kidding Who? I loved hearing Helen speak on this topic. It’s so REAL for so many of us and God wants to meet us in the middle of it. Isn’t it great to realize that He wants to lead us in every area of our lives? He’s the perfect Father, and He knows how to help us tackle the challenges and joys of parenting.

Btw…I’ve got the two most amazing kids on the PLANET! (I sure do love you Corey & Carson. And I love being your dad like you can’t believe. You ROCK!)

Here were Helen’s top 10 highlights from the weekend:

1. The Office…one of the best clips ever. Jim and Pam and the “wrong” baby! A great laugh to ring in a topic where if you don’t laugh from time to time, you’ll go a little crazy.

2. As a parent, seasons change, stages progress. God has a role and a plan for you to play, so play it. There will be lots of people in your kids’ lives: friends, teachers, acquaintances but you kid has only one mom and only one dad. From Provider, to Trainer, to Coach, to Friend… parenting is a journey worth committing your life and time.

3. We are stewards, not owners. When we understand that we are responsible to our kids, not for our kids, we are able to help them discover what their Creator has for them.

4. 16 years makes a big difference. What my mom told me when I was a young mom is true, “Parenting. The days are long, the years are short.”

5. Lead, love, listen. I know adolescences isn’t the highlight of life, but during the stretching years of being your teenagers coach, those three words will take you a long way.

6. Families who aren’t perfect but who are reflecting the perfect love and redemption of Jesus. The video story made me cry hard. I know these families, I love these families. I love my church – a place where families are being rescued.

7. Baby Jorden and Baby Lincoln… a great prop to start the message, and I have to be honest, those little babies felt great in my arms!

8. You aren’t just raising a child, you are creating an adult. The truth of our call as parents…sobering but true.

9. First and foremost, let Him impress His truth on you, so you can then impress His love on them. “Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7. Love the Message paraphrase of that verse.

10. As a parent, you have to live in grace or you’ll live in guilt. Pick grace. The cross cries out, “There is hope.”

The Uprising!

Four days ago I stood up and welcomed hundreds of pastors and leaders to Quest Community Church for The Uprising. It wasn’t five minutes into my talk that our hearts began to break over the American Church in crisis. It’s still hard to quantify what happened in our hours together. We had an unforgettable day…the Holy Spirit had room to work, people came ready to learn and grow, and they left wrecked and unhinged.

As I’ve taken some time to reflect, I wanted to share with you some of my personal highlights from the day (in no particular order)…

1. Hundreds of Questers served as volunteers for The Uprising, and you guys were REMARKABLE. You went all out. One of the top comments we’ve received from pastors was how clear it is that our volunteers know they’re already living in the Uprising, and how gorgeously they served out of the overflow of what we live in all the time. I couldn’t agree more. Thank you!

2. This was our first year hosting The Uprising and we had no idea what to expect. When more than 860 pastors and leaders stepped forward to join us, we were blown away. We asked the LORD to bring us the people He determined…and you CAME! Really thankful for His blessing.

3. I loved seeing our new facility do what it was made to do. So many people (including Perry Noble, Pete Wilson & Shaun King) pulled me aside to tell me how much they loved the facility and what a great place it is to do ministry. I agree. Seeing groups huddling up, discussing what they learned…people spending time with Jesus and with each other out on the plaza, under the portico, in the landing, by the fireplaces…it was great. (If you need any reason push through to be faithful to fulfill your Imagine2 Commitment, you saw it at the Uprising!)

4. The worship and the arts were great. I particularly loved This is Our God which kind of became a theme song of the conference. We taught it in the first session and by the last session, the whole room was blaring it out. God really anointed it.

5. I loved meeting pastors and their teams. Our team loved cheering on people who went all out to get here to help their churches step forward and  make a difference in this dark world. I especially loved the guest reception Wednesday night and the senior and lead pastor dessert on Thursday. In one conversation, I was talking with pastors from Kenya and Peru. I was blown away, and it reminded me of the scope of what we’re doing. This is a God-sized endeavor!

6. I was ridiculously proud of Quest staffers…Sharon, Justin, Helen, Billy, Dave, Amber, Brad and Jim. Your workshops and breakouts were great. You live in constant awe of what God is doing in this place and you went all out to help Uprisers see it for themselves – just unbelievable! Thank you for pouring your lives into God’s Acts 2 dream here and helping others see it and experience it for themselves. I’ll sit and listen to you guys teach any day of the week!

7. Thanks to our guest speakers and presenters Perry Noble, Shaun King & Pete Wilson who hit it out of the park. Perry was funny (as always), and he did an amazing job leading us from the main stage. Pete’s authenticity and heart-feltness was evident in every conversation. And Shaun’s optimism and focus on small churches and social media breathed hope into so many pastors. I’m so grateful for all of these guys. They are real friends and partners in ministry, and they were blown away to be here. Their teams fell in love with what God is doing here…and with Questers. They’re still processing what they saw and experienced – what we live in all the time, but never want to get used to. I loved that these guys and hundreds of other pastors and leaders got to experience this incredible community for themselves! Really in awe.

8. Among my private highlights of the day were the constant conversations I was in with pastors who were wrecked. Over and over again I heard pastors telling me, “We will not do it the same. We have got to reconsider the way we do church.” Go for it. It’s time for an Uprising! Not minor tweaks or adjustments. God has more for your lives, hearts and ministries. Almost every pastor I spoke to mentioned stories, baptisms, and/or the Pendletons. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place. Over and over again they asked me, “Where in the world do you get stories like these?” (Questers, they really are gorgeous, and…they’re all over the place. Pastors and leaders really were catching the vision of the Uprising through you! Thank you!)

9. A huge thanks to our Uprising Leadership Team. This team of volunteers and staff members sat with me from the beginning and met with me for hours nearly every week for six months. I loved going through the hundreds and hundreds of surveys with you after the conference. They were so outstanding that they looked rigged. Way to go, leaders! (And thanks for your kind words, pastors!)

10. Probably the thing I loved most from the whole day was lighting the beacon and looking out at faces of men and women of God who want to serve and see the church become. You guys listened like there was a test. Your hearts were soft…sometimes you mouths dropped open…your eyes lit up. And you received the word that it’s not too late…we can do this together. We can light the beacon. You just believed it. (Praying for you like you can’t imagine, Uprisers!)

p.s. One of my favorite things was getting to announce The Uprising 2011! We’ll be together again next year on April 14th with Erwin McManus as one of our main stage speakers. We’ve extended the conference rate through the end of this week, and we’ve already had around 100 people get their tickets. Take advantage of this crazy conference rate asap. (When we restart registration, the price will jump by $20!)

p.p.s. You cannot believe the steady flow of tweets, Facebook posts, messages & emails about The Uprising. Over and over again people are saying, “Everything is changed – I see the world, friends differently.” You can go to www.theuprising.net to tell your story and read the stories of others. We’d LOVE to hear from you! (Don’t miss the survey on the main page of this blog, too. Thanks!)

Not a Conference, a Movement

The Uprising has just begun…not a day, not a conference, but a movement.

Thursday was remarkable. We’ve had an incredible response from people around the country, and we’re floored by what God has started. I wish you could see the surveys and the tweets being sent my way. When a pastor’s heart is ignited…watch out!

We are humbled. This was way bigger than just a conference…

Praying right now for almost 900 pastors and leaders who headed home challenged, stretched, and I hope…inspired. Keep praying that the beacons stay lit. Cheering you on!

Take a look, and remember what God just did in you, Uprisers…
